Ms. Esin Mete, Chairwoman of Toros Agri and President of International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA), delivered a speech at IFA Safety Summit, held in Vancouver, Canada on 24th March 2015. In her opening speech, Ms. Mete made important statements regarding the sectoral security and said that the summit was very important for preventing the occupational accidents in the fertilizer industry and ensuring that the occupational safety is measurable.
Reminding the determination of International Labor Organization, Ms. Mete said 2.3 million employees lose their lives in occupational accidents and underlined that this was something unacceptable. Also reminding that the things that cannot be measured cannot be improved, she stated IFA developed voluntary benchmarks for the members that successfully fulfill IFA’s “Employee Safety”, “Environmental Performance” and “Energy Efficiency”.
During her speech, Ms. Esin Mete also dealt with the issues of the “Protect and Sustain” program. Ms. Mete underlined that “Protect & Sustain”, applied as a global certification program, is the sole program allocated to the fertilizer industry towards monitoring the performance in the sustainable production.
Explaining her opinion that it is necessary for all of the IFA members to have more information on safety, health and environment principles, abbreviated as SHE, Ms. Mete added that the problems regarding these issues can only be solved by dedication.
